Entering the day there were 81 different scenarios for the relegation zone and it seems like at one point or another on the day all 81 reared their heads. With all ten EPL matches going at the same time there seemed to be goals every couple of minutes and with each goal a different side fell into the bottom three. Drama at its grandest.
Blackpool had to go to Old Trafford where the champions Manchester United had not lost all year. With twenty minutes to go Blackpool held a shocking 2-1 lead and really only needed a draw to stave off elimination. Instead the wheels came off as United scored three goals to win 4-2 and send Blackpool out of the EPL for next year.
Meanwhile, Wolves looked dead and buried at halftime of their match as they were down 3-0 to Blackburn at home. They needed a major rally to survive and set about it in the second half. An 87th minute goal from Stephen Hunt pulled them to within 3-2, but the goal itself pushed Wolves over Birmingham on the goals scored tiebreaker.
That goal sent shockwaves all the way to London where Birmingham were tied with Tottenham and feeling safe with their draw. Suddenly the Woves goal meant Birmingham had to have a goal in the final five minutes of play. It was not to be as Birmingham now are heading down.
So at the end of the day it was Birmingham, Blackpool and west Ham who are relegated from the EPL. Arsenal continued their freefall as they slipped to 4th place. Arsenal finished with only two wins in their final eleven EPL matches. Finally, Tottenham were able to stay ahead of Liverpool and grab the Europa League berth for next season thanks to their 2-1 win.
