The drama was in effect as the groups were drawn for South Africa 2010. Mouthwatering opening round matches dot the groups....most notably USA-England as well as Brazil-Portugal. Mexico drew the opening game of the World Cup against hosts South Africa.
The US was drawn into Group C with England, Algeria and Slovenia. The Americans will open with England on June 12th.
Group G looks to be the group of death with Brazil, Ivory Coast, Portugal and North Korea. Sure North Korea are the minnows of the group, but in the end one of the three big boys will be going home. Ivory Coast is considered a darkhorse to go deep into the World Cup with stars such as Didier Drogba and Kolo Toure. Another thing to keep in mind is that the runner up in the Group of Death will most likely face Spain to open the knockout rounds!
On the other hand the softest groups appear to be Group A and Group F. France definitely have had the "soccer gods" smiling upon them lately were rewarded once again. Just a week after the obvious handball allowed them to qualify they missed all the big boys in the World Cup draw. France will get South Africa, Mexico and Uruguay in group play. Group F also looks soft with Italy getting the benefit. New Zealand and Slovakia shouldn't trouble with Paraguay offering the only real resistance.
Group A -
South Africa, Mexico, Uruguay, France
Group B -
Argentina, Nigeria, South Korea, Greece
Group C -
England, USA, Algeria, Slovenia
Group D -
Germany, Australia, Serbia, Ghana
Group E -
Holland, Denmark, Japan, Cameroon
Group F -
Italy, Paraguay, New Zealand, Slovakia
Group G -
Brazil, North Korea, Ivory Coast, Portugal
Group H -
Spain, Switzerland, Honduras, Chile
