Wigan threw a wrench in Liverpool's chase for a top EPL placing and a Champions League spot for next year as they won 1-0 Monday evening behind a Rodallega first half goal. Everything seemed to go wrong for Liverpool in the opening half as they could never get their legs under them and string a meaningful attack together. Instead it was turnover after turnover and Wigan were to take advantage.
In the 34th minute of play Wigan would break through. Another Liverpool giveaway left Wigan on the attack. A Boyce cross left Rodallega for the finish and Wigan had their deserved lead. Rodallega, N'Zogbia and Figueroa caused Liverpool fits the entire match as the second half saw more Wigan on the ball, but Liverpool finally decide to give a fightback.
The desperation was apparent as the second half wore on and Liverpool pushed harder searching for the tying goal. Despite Torres finally get some of the ball the lack of help from Kuyt and Gerrard was too much to overcome. Liverpool suffered another shutout away from home and failed to move over Tottenham and Manchester City in the standings. Instead they'll stay 6th. Wigan, on the other hand, climbed two spots to 14th and grabbed a valuable three points in their effort to get clear of the bottom three places.
