The final 3 spots for the 2008 NCAA Mens soccer quarterfinals were decided today. Top ranked Wake Forest had no trouble with Dartmouth. Northwestern continued their impressive run, while North Carolina needed overtime to defeat Illinois-Chicago.
The defending champions showed why they are once again the favorites to win it all as Wake Forest crushed a helpless Dartmouth side 7-0. Cody Arnoux had a hat trick along with 2 assists to lead Wake in the easy win.
Northwestern advanced to another Final 8 appearance as they took care of Akron in a tight 1-0 bad weather match. It was an unlikely hero that notched the winner as senior Geoff Fallon scored his first goal of the season to send Northwestern through.
In Chapel Hill, North Carolina had to rally to defeat a quality Illinois-Chicago side. It looked like UIC would be the winners on the day until an 87th minute goal from Michael Callahan sent the game to overtime where Garry Lewis would find the winner for the Tar Heels.
Final 8 matchups -
Northwestern - North Carolina
Wake Forest - South Florida
St Johns - Indiana
