MLS has awarded Vancouver a franchise for the 2011 season. The Vancouver will become the 16th MLS team and 2nd Canadian squad. Seattle begins play tonight and Philadelphia enters MLS in 2010.
"Our goal is to become one of the world's best soccer leagues," MLS commissioner Don Garber said at a news conference. "The addition of Vancouver will help us get to that point."
Vancouver currently has a USL first division side in the Whitecaps already playing, but no word has been released as to what the Vancouver MLS franchise will be named. The team will play at BC Place, a 20,000 seat soccer-specific stadium that will undergo a major renovation before Vancouver joins MLS play.
