The US womens soccer team was drawn into Group C for the upcoming 2011 FIFA Womens World Cup to be played in Germany next summer. Joining the USA are Sweden, Columbia and North Korea. It is not a terrible draw for the #1 ranked Americans who will be heavy favorites to take the group.
The US suffered their first ever loss in qualifying falling to Mexico thus they had to make their way through a home and home playoff against Italy. The Americans won both legs by identical 1-0 scores to book their place in the 2010 Womens World Cup. The US has never failed to qualify for a World Cup in womens soccer.
Striker Abby Wambach will lead the way as the US looks to overcome the home field advantage of the powerful German squad. Germany heads Group A along with Canada, France and Nigeria. Group B looks to be wide open as all four squads fancy their chances to advance. England, Mexico, Japan and New Zealand comprise the group. Group D has powerful Brazil leading the way. Australia, Norway and Guinea will fight it out for second place.
