The US Under 23s notched an impressive 2-0 victory over the Mexico U23s Wednesday night at FC Dallas Stadium in Frisco, Texas. The win closed out a great day for US Soccer as the
US men won in Italy and the US Women smashed Denmark.
The US U23s were impressive in attack all night as the threesome of Juan Agudelo, Freddy Adu and Joe Gyua gave the Mexicans fits all night. The match started slowly as both teams were content to knock the ball around the back and feel each other out in the opening 15 minutes. A low shot from Agudelo and a long range volley from Mexico's Ricardo Bocanegra were the only actions of the opening 20.
Then the Americans started to get
Joe Gyau involved down the left side. He began repeatedly getting in down the flank and the American attack sprung to life. Gyau earned a corner in the 34th minute that led to the opening goal. Mix Diskerud fired the corner into the near post where Juan Agudelo darted in and headed home. A solid set piece goal.
Just two minutes later the US lead was doubled as Mexico allowed Freddy Adu far too much time and space on the left. Adu dribbled inside and fired a low shot from just outside the box. The ball deflected off Diskerud and into the Mexican net. Diskerud was credited with the goal.
The Americans were in control and the central midfield duo of Alfredo Morales and Mix Diskerud were absolutely dominant as the match went 2-0 to the break.
The second half started much like the first. Gyau and Adu dominating on the flanks with Diskerud and Morales holding the middle. Then the US started making substitutions. Adu, Gyau and Agudelo all came off and the match changed drastically. The final 15 minutes was all Mexico as they attacked in waves. Bill Hamid in the US goal was called into action on several occasions.
Mexico was denied a penalty appeal after Zarek Valentin turned a ball over in the back, but the referee ruled the Mexico player dived and gave him a yellow to the howls of the Mexico bench.
In the end, the US was able to see out the 2-0 victory and look quite solid heading into qualifying for the 2012 Olympics.
