The US Under 20 National Soccer Team rallied to defeat Costa Rica 2-1 behind second half goals from Michael Stephens and Jared Jeffrey in Sarasota, Florida. After an uneventful first half of play in which neither side looked likely to score, the second half was lively.
Costa Rica came out and jumped on top just after halftime, but the US Under 20s were not daunted and they rallied back quickly. In the 60th minute, Peri Marosevic of FC Dallas ripped a shot from 20 yards out that Costa Rica's goalkeeper did well to save, but Stephens pounced on a huge rebound and tapped it into the goal. It was Stephens first international goal at the U20 level.
As the match was heading to a 1-1 draw the US stole the match at the death. Tony Taylor sped down the left side and got to the endline. He cut the ball back and past his defender to get a low, driven cross off. Jared Jeffrey, who plays for Belgian side Club Brugge, was there to finish at the back post and make it a 2-1 final.
