A game the US thought they had hope in winning quickly turned otherwise as the German Under 20s thoroughly dominated an outmatched USA squad in the opener of the the Under 20 World Cup in Egypt. US Coach Thomas Rongen threw out a questionable lineup at best as he started a pair of college kids at center mid in Dillon Powers and Brian Ownby who were quickly overwhelmed by the much better Germans. The only thing that made it even competetive in the middle was when Rongen subbed on Bryan Arguez who was more composed on the ball. Overall it was just a simply disappointing effort from the US Under 20s.
Germany grabbed goals in the 30th and 32nd minute to break the match open. In the 30th Ownby brought down a German attacker in the box and Semih Aydilek put home the penalty for the lead. Just two minutes later Florian Jungwirth doubled the lead.
The US tried to fight back in the 2nd half but never could hold enough possession to be dangerous for any extended periods of time.The final nail in the coffin came in the 72nd minute as Manuel Schaeffler notched the third for the Germans.
Next up for the US Under 20s is a match with Cameroon on Tuesday.
