Coach Wilmer Cabrera and the US Under 17 National Team opens qualifying for the 2009 Under 17 World Cup to be held in Nigeria in October. CONCACAF qualifying will open in Mexico next week. The US Under 17s are in Group A of the eight team tournament with the top two in each grouping gaining a berth to the 2009 U17 World Cup.
Along with the United States in Group A is Honduras, Canada and Cuba. Group B has Mexico, Trinidad, Costa Rica and Guatemala. The US opens play on Tuesday against Cuba in Tijuana, Mexico. They'll face Canada on Wednesday and Honduras Friday.
The US has played a very challenging schedule in preparation for the qualifiers. Last month they travelled to South America playing a three game schedule. They lost to Argentina and Uruguay while beating Bolivia. They also had a win and draw against Venezuela.
The US Under 17s are led on defense by dominating keeper Earl Edwards. The attack is led by strikers Stefan Jerome and Jack McInerney along with midfielders Carlos Martinez and Charles Renken.
