The US mens national soccer team continued their dominance over Mexico on US soil defeating Mexico 2-0 in Columbus, Ohio behind a pair of goals from Michael Bradley. It was a slightly shaky start and Tim Howard was called upon to make a point blank save on Giovanni dos Santos, but the rest of the half belonged to the Americans.
The break came in the 45th minute on a corner kick from DeMarcus Beasley. The ball was curled to the back post where Landon Donovan headed it back across the face of goal where Gooch Onyewu fired a header on goal that was saved. The rebound sat right in front and Michael Bradley flicked it into the roof of the net for the opener and a 1-0 halftime lead.
The Americans looked solid opening the 2nd half, but it was a reckless challenge from Mexico captain Rafa Marquez that sealed the Mexico fate. Marquez went in cleats exposed on the high ball challenge with US keeper Tim Howard spiking him in the knee. The red card was immediate as players tussled in the aftermath and Mexico were forced to finish the match with 10 men.
The dagger came in the 90th minute and it was Michael Bradley once again. Landon Donovan held up an attack on the left wing and found Bradley drifting down the middle of the field. Bradley had tons of time to line up his shot and fired it at Oswaldo Sanchez in the Mexico goal. It went right under a diving Sanchez and into the net for the 2-0 margin of victory.
The US is now unbeaten in eleven straight against Mexico on US soil and gets the Americans off to the start they wanted in their prusuit to qualify for World Cup 2010 in South Africa. The US now travels for a difficult road test at El Salvador and must do so without Tim Howard who will miss the match due to yellow cards.
