US and Mexico to meet in first friendly on Mexican soil since 1984

Published 8/3/2007 11:23:34 AM by staff from socceramerica.com

The US mens national team will attempt to do what it's never done in 23 previous games and beat Mexico in Mexico when the USA and Mexico meet for the third time this year on Sept. 9 at the famed Estadio Azteca in Mexico City (TV, ESPN2 and Univision, live, 4 pm ET).

The USA has dominated the series of late, collecting an 8-0-1 home record against Mexico since 2000 but it is 0-22-1 all-time against Mexico in Mexico.  The last time Mexico hosted the USA in a friendly was in 1984 when the Tri won, 2-1. Their next five meetings have come in World Cup qualifying, Gold Cup or Confederations Cup.

The USA has a lifetime record of 14-29-10 against Mexico in a series that dates to 1934. Since the rivalry between these two teams began in earnest in 1990, the sides have played 26 times, with the U.S. holding a 12-7-7 advantage.

"Playing a match at the Estadio Azteca is one of the truly special qualities of the U.S.-Mexico rivalry," said U.S. head coach Bob Bradley, who is 2-0-0 this year against Mexico.  "Along with the history and passion of the series, the distinctive challenges of playing away against Mexico present another valuable opportunity to advance our program."

This year's contest comes on the Saturday a FIFA double-fixture week, so both teams can recall their stars from Europe and have a week to prepare for the game.

2007 US schedule:
Aug. 22 at Sweden (Gothenburg, Sweden) 2:30 p.m. ET FSC / Galavision (2:30 ET/PT)
Sept. 9 at Mexico (Mexico City) 4 p.m. ET / ESPN2/  Univision
Oct. 14 at Catalonia Nou Camp (Barcelona, Spain) TBD / FSC & Galavision
Oct. 17 at Switzerland St. Jakob-Park (Basel, Switzerland) 2:30 p.m. ET / FSC & Galavision
