Upsets Abound at NCAA Soccer Tourney

Upsets Abound at NCAA Soccer Tourney
The top seeds did not fare well in the round of 32 at the NCAA Mens Soccer Tournament on Sunday.  Four of the top 15 were sent packing from the tourney and a couple were huge surprises.

Most notably was #3 UCLA getting blasted at home by minnows San Diego 5-2.  It really was not even close.  San Diego put 12 shots on frame to UCLA's scant 5.  Four different players found the net for San Diego led by Patrick Wallen with a pair.

Another huge surprise saw St Louis crashing out to #40 Farleigh Dickinson 2-1 in overtime.  Senior Jack McVey’s header into the upper right corner of the goal almost three minutes into double overtime was the difference.  FDU now will face powerful North Carolina in the sweet 16.

Coastal Carolina knocked off #15 Wake Forest in overtime.  I would not call this one much of an upset as Coastal is has already notched 20 wins on the year.  Jakub Stourac notched the winner for the Chanticleers who get teh reward of travelling to face #1 Maryland in the next round.

North Carolina were also a near casualty, but they slipped past UMBC in penalty kicks after a scoreless match.  Otherwise, it was business as usual for the top seeds as #1 Akron, #2 Maryland, #4 Notre Dame, #6 Georgetown and #7 UConn all advanced to the final sixteen.
