It was business as usual as the North Carolina women claimed their 21st womens national soccer championship Sunday with a 1-0 win over Stanford in cold College Station, Texas. Stanford came into the final with a perfect 25-0-0 record and one of the top offenses in the country. North Carolina played their usual perfect defense and the defense won out. Stanford could only generate nine shots the entire match as UNC controlled play in their defensive third.
North Carolina does a great job of pressuring and swarming the ball," Stanford coach Paul Ratcliffe said. "It's easy to talk about as a coach, what you need to do. But it's difficult in there. It was hard for us to get into a rhythm and play our type of soccer."
Give that UNC defense an early lead and it is lights out and Jessica McDonald did just that scoring in the third minute of play. Stanford fought uphill the whole match from there. It looked to have tied the game just before halftime, but the goal was disallowed for offside.
