Yes you read the title right. Sunderland went into Stamford Bridge and shocked the EPL leaders Sunday 3-0. This was no fluke. Sunderland were well deserving of their victory and the two goals were both of the best quality. The home crowd were stunned as Chelsea had not allowed a visitor to score all season at the Bridge.
As the opening half crept on Sunderland applied more and more pressure to a Chelsea defense that was missing Alex and John Terry. A flurry of Sunderland shots just before halftime finally resulted in the goal. Petr Czec was forced into three saves in a row as the final clearance went out to Sunderland's Nedum Onuoha who set out for goal. Onuoha skipped past four Chelsea players before slotting the ball past a sliding Czec. It was a wonderful individual effort to put Sunderland on top.
The second half was much the same. As Chelsea never got any flow in their attack's while Sunderland continued to look dangerous on the counter. In the 52nd minute the home side found themselves down two as Sunderland put together a perfect series of passes leading to an Asamoah Gyan finish.
The day before we had seen Manchester United go down 2-0 and respond with a furious rally to earn a draw. Chelsea had no such fight in them. It was clearly to be Sunderland's day as they earned a historic victory in London. The final dagger came late on as Danny Welbeck latched onto a poor backpass from Ashley Cole to make it 3-0.
The Chelsea loss takes some of the sting out of the Man U performance of Saturday and keeps the EPL title race open. Chelsea stay on 28 points while Arsenal (winners at Everton) climb to within 2 points on 26. Manchester United are third on 25 points.
