Spain opened 2009 Confederations Cup play with a resounding message to the field that they are the class as they destroyed an overmatched New Zealand squad 5-0 behind star Fernando Torres. The match was over almsot before it began as the Kiwis found themselves overwhelmed by the fast and skilled Spaniards. Fernando Torres notched a hat trick in only 11 minutes of play staking Spain to a quick 3-0 lead.
The 5-0 win extended Spain's unbeaten streak to a whopping 33 matches. After the Fernando Torres hat trick, Cesc Fabregas made it 4-0 heading to halftime. Spain let up a bit in the second half with the match well in hand and only added a 5th from David Villa just after the break. The easy victory allowed Spain to get some extra rest for Torres and Xavi who were pulled off early in the 2nd half.
In the other group match Iraq and South Africa played to a 0-0 draw in which South Africa narrowly missed scoring on several occasions. Next up for Spain is a meeting with Iraq on Wednesday while South Africa will face New Zealand.
