A high quality second half lifted the US over Honduras 2-0 in Washington DC Gold Cup play Wednesday night with goals from Santino Quaranta and Brian Ching. The opening half saw both sides getting up and down the field in a wide open match. Freddy Adu created a couple of chances, but was unable to find the net and the game went to halftime 0-0.
The US squad started brightly in the second half, but it was the introduction of Charlie Davies and Benny Feilhaber from the substitutes bench that really sparked the American attack. Feilhaber teamed with an in form Kyle Beckerman to keep the pressure on Honduras.
The opening goal was a moment of magic from the US as they came down the left side and strung together several quick passes directed by Feilhaber. The ball was played to the top of the box to Charlie Davies who spun and layed off a perfect ball to the onrushing Santino Quaranta who fired the ball into the net. A wonderful buildup and perfect finish. The second goal would come just minutes later as a quick restart led to a cross that found Brian Ching in the center of the box for the goal.
The win gives the US control of Group B and assures a quarterfinal spot next weekend. The US will close group play with Haiti.

The US women have their new star. First there was Mia Hamm. Then there was Abby Wambach. It looks like young Alex Morgan is the next in line of the great American womens goal scorer.
