So much for expansion teams being bad. The Seattle Sounders are debunking that myth very quickly as they notched their third straight win to open the 2009 MLS season with a 2-0 win in Toronto. One might have expected a different result heading into the match. Toronto FC were playing their home opener in front of a raucus crowd and Seattle wonderkid Fredy Montero was home in Seattle facing criminal allegations. However, the Sounders had other ideas.
A very classy goal opened the scoring and shocked the home crowd as Freddie Ljungberg hooked up with Nate Jacqua on a 1-2 that left Ljungberg in on goal where he calmly slotted home the first goal of the match in the 15th minute. The rest of the night would not be so easy though as Seattle keeper Kasey Keller was called into action several times.
The real dagger came just before halftime when a loose ball fell to an unmarked Steve Zakuani who netted the 2nd goal. Kasey Keller and the Seattle defense took care of business in the 2nd half and the Sounders not only had their 3rd straight win, they had their 3rd straight shutout as well.
