South American squads are running roughshod over the competition so far at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. In fact, after two rounds of group matches, all five South American teams sit atop their respective groups and look poised to advance into the knockout phases. A truly remarkable showing so far.
In the entire history of the World Cup a European nation has never won a World Cup outside of the European continent. As the big European sides like England, Germany, France, Italy and Spain log surprisingly poor results, the South Americans just keep winning. The South American teams are unbeaten in 10 games logging 8 wins and 2 draws. Their goal differential is a whopping 18-4.
Argentina, Brazil and Chile all have two wins in two games while Uruguay and Paraguay have a win and draw. Paraguay's draw was with defending champions Italy. Several important matches remain on the schedule for South American squads. Most notably is the Uruguay-Mexico clash tomorrow to decide the Group A champion. Also a mouthwatering clash in the Group of Death between Brazil and Portugal.
