The award for 2008 World Player of the Year has been given to Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo at a ceremony in Zurich, Switzerland. Final voting for the award saw Lionel Messi of Barcelona in 2nd place, Fernando Torres of Liverpool in 3rd followed by Kaka of Inter Milan. Cristiano Ronaldo becomes the first player from the Premier League to ever win the coveted title. Thus far it had only been awarded to players based at clubs in Spain or Italy.
Ronaldo led Manchester United to the EPL title, Champions League title, and World Club Championship last year while notching 42 goals along the way.
Ronaldo received the award from Pele, and said: ''It is an overwhelming moment and a very special moment in my life and I would like to say to my mother and sister that the fireworks can be set off now. I'm extremely happy, it's one of the most important moments in my life and I hope I can come back.''
''This is the climax of a fantastic era for me. I'm happy and proud about what has been done by my team and what we have won. I am lucky to to be part of the history of a club like Manchester United.''
Cristiano Ronaldo will head back to England next to face Wigan on Wednesday at Old Trafford.
