The Los Angeles Galaxy think they have their man to take them to the MLS championship this year. The Galaxy are already sitting atop the Western Conference, just ahead of FC Dallas, and have the best record in MLS. Now they have landed veteran striker Robbie Keane from Tottenham in the English Premier League. The move potentially gives LA a star striker to go along with their talented midfield of Beckham and Landon Donovan. The rest of MLS must be shaking in their boots.
"I have already discussed football with Bruce Arena, and I know exactly what he wants from me," Keane said. "I am fit, fresh and ready to go. I've come here to score goals and help this team achieve their goals. This is a massive opportunity for me in my career. I aim to grab it with both hands and hopefully help give the Galaxy fans what they want."
The Galaxy provided no details on Robbie Keane's contract, but reports in England have the Irish national team captain with a two year deal at about $9 million which would make him the league's third highest-paid player, after Beckham and Thierry Henry. LA reportedly paid a transfer fee of $3 million to Tottenham to get his rights.
To make room for Keane the Galaxy are expeted to move MLS veteran Juan Pablo Angel who has not made the impact expected for LA. "We haven't made any other player acquisitions or departures at this point," Arena said. "We'll have to do something, yes. There's always the possibility we'll make more moves than just this one."
