United wins Manchester Derby on late Michael Owen winner

The battle of Manchester will go down as one for the ages as Manchester United struck last to defeat Manchester City 4-3 Sunday in English Premier League play.  The anticipation and war of words had been building for weeks and the Manchester derby lived up to all expectations.

Wayne Rooney would open the wildly offensive day striking in only the 2nd minute of play, but Gareth Barry would pull City even in the 16th.  The real action would come in the 2nd half though as 5 goals were scored.

Darren Fletcher and Craig Bellamy would waste no time as each scored in the opening 10 minutes of the half [ushing the score to 2-2 on the afternoon.  Then came the late game heroics.  With 10 minutes to go it was Darren Fletcher once again.  This time Fletcher headed home a perfect cross from Ryan Giggs and it looked like Manchester United had their winner.

City was not about to go down without a fight thought.  Gareth Barry sent Craig Bellamy on a long run which he finished expertly to level the score.  Now the match seemed headed for a draw until the center ref decided on 5 minutes of extra time.  Just enough for Michael Owen to become the hero.  Owen ran onto a great pass from Ryan Giggs and finished with class for the winner.

The win moves United to 2nd place in the EPL table 3 points behind Chelsea in 1st.  City fall to 4th on the young season.
