We all knew the recent US run to the final of the Confederations Cup would pay big dividends for US soccer. Playing Italy, Egypt and Brazil twice could not help but make the US men stronger. Now the trickle down effect has started as individual players are beginning to cash in on the Confederations Cup performance.
US central defender Oguchi Onyewu has been the first to benefit as he signed a deal with Italian Serie A giants AC Milan. The 27 yr old signed a 3 year deal. AC Milan announced the signing on their website and pointed out he holds a Belgian passport, which means Onyewu will not count as one of only two non-EU players Italian sides are allowed to sign each season.
The AC Milan bid really came out of nowhere as they had not been linked with Onyewu in the press. Onyewu accepted the contract over other bids from Ajax and Paris St Germain.
Gooch Onyewu could end up partnering with Silva in central defence given captain Paolo Maldini retired at the end of last season and Alessandro Nesta and Kakha Kaladze are injury prone.
