Just when you thought things couldn't get any worse for New York Red Bull they did. A depleted lineup and a daunting schedule just added fire to a rapidly burning down 2009 season. A tight schedule with little room for rest greeted the last place Red Bull this week and it took its toll. First a midweek match at Toronto followed by a weekend tilt at Columbus. Both are very difficult places to play when you are feeling good about yourself, much less for a last place squad.
The midweek game in Toronto was a total disaster as the homeside ran out to an easy 2-0 win behind goals from Pablo Vitti and Dwayne De Rosario.
The team had to regroup and head on to Columbus where they would be without Mike Petke and Juan Pablo Angel as well as Dane Richards and Macoumba Kandji. Columbus would strike right at the death of the fist half when Chad Marshall headed home a Guillermo Barros Schelotto corner kick. The goal would stand up and the long 2009 MLS season just continued to get worse for NY.
Red Bull is on a 0-7-2 stretch and is riding a league record 22 match regular season road winless streak (0-16-6). The Red Bulls' last league victory away from Giants Stadium was May 10, 2008 at Los Angeles. Currently they are 2-12-4 on the year and firmly lodged in last place of the MLS Eastern Conference with no hope of playoffs whatsoever.
