Very few gave the New York Red Bull much of a chance having to go to MLS defending champions Houston and get a victory on Sunday. The Red Bulls did not just earn a victory they did it in smashing fashion to advance to the Western Conference Finals. New York clobbered Houston 3-0 and will now meet Real Salt Lake for a spot in the MLS Cup.
New York struck first in the 25th minute as Dane Richards ran onto a ball and placed it perfectly into the Houston net stunning the home crowd. Only 10 minutes later they would get the 2nd goal when Ricardo Clark was called for a handball in the area. Juan Pablo Angel knocked home the ensuing penalty kick and New Tork were on their way.
Houston tried to fight back in the 2nd half producing many scoring opportunities, but all went unrewarded. New York added another goal for insult in the 81st as Dane Richards set up John Wolyniec for an easy knock in. The loss eliminates the Houston Dynamo from the playoffs where they were attempting to win their third MLS title in a row.
