Ben Olsen fired a hat trick as D.C. United rang up a 4-2 decision on New York at RFK on Sunday afternoon.T he U.S. international opened on 17 minutes, only to have former teammate Dema Kovalenko strike quickly to bring the Red Bulls level.
Luciano Emilio regained the lead just out of intermission, but Bobby Boswell's ejection at the hour seemed to leave the hosts vulnerable. However, Olsen scored on 72 and 84 minutes to render Juan Pablo Angel's late strike meaningless.
Elsewhere, Houston bested Columbus 2-1 in a Sunday evening game that saw all three goals come in an eight-minute span. Joseph Ngwenya and former Dynamo striker Alejandro Moreno traded goals midway through the first period, but it was Chad Marshall's own goal in the 28th minute that earned the MLS champs a third straight win.
Juan Carlos Toja, Abe Thompson and Drew Moor did the deed as Western leaders FC Dallas secured their standing with a 3-1 victory over Los Angeles at Pizza Hut Park on Saturday. Robbie Findley scored moments before halftime to cancel Toja's opener, but Thompson regained the lead for good from the spot in the 54th minute.
"We had a few little problems in the first half after going one-nil up," Dallas boss Steve Morrow told MLSNet. "I thought we got a little bit stretched defensively and gave them a little too much room to play. But we talked about that at halftime, and for the most part got that sorted out - I think the boys very much deserved the win."
Meanwhile, Paolo Nagamura's late striker lifted visiting Chivas USA past punchless Chicago 1-0. "I'm feeling great here at Chivas," said the 79th minute hero, who arrived in an early season trade. "They guys welcomed me as soon as I came here. I feel great here and I think the guys did a great job today."
