The Columbus Crew defeated the Chicago Fire 2-1 on Saturday to move three points clear atop the Eastern Conference MLS standings. All three goals in the match were scored in a wild three minute sequence at the end of the opening half. Interestingly enough, all three were scored by Columbus. Adam Moffett put the Crew ahead and then an own goal from Frankie Hedjuk tied the match a minute later, only to have Jason Garey head Columbus the come right back and head Columbus the winner.
Elsewhere, FC Dallas continues their hot play as a David Ferreira penalty kick lifted them to their second straight shutout win since the World Cup break. They are now up to third in the MLS Western Conference standings moving over Colorado. The other two MLS matches on Saturday ended in 1-1 ties. The Philadelphia Union were looking for a rare win, but could not hold onto a 1-0 lead settling for the tie as Chivas equalized through Blair Gavin. DC United also grabbed a point on the road as they held on for a tie in San Jose.
Tonight marks the return of Landon Donovan to MLS from the World Cup as the LA Galaxy host the Seattle Sounders at the Home Depot Center. Both Landon Donovan and Edson Buddle are expected to suit up for the match, but it is not yet determined if Donovan will start. The match is televised on ESPN2. New York Red Bull travels to Colorado to take on the Rapids tonight as well.
