The Chicago Fire snatched the advantage from the Revolution in their first round MLS Playoff matchup as Chicago earned a draw in New England Thursday night. The Fire now returns home for the second leg needing a win to advance. Both teams struggled to create chances in a physical contest. Chicago had the best chance in the 76th minute, but Brian McBride's header was ruled out for offside.
New England has been decimated by injuries and suspensions lately forcing coach Steve Nicol had to shuffle his squad around with four regular starters out. Chris Tierney started at left back, pushing Jay Heaps into the center of defense. Sainey Nyassi earned a recall on the right wing as Mauricio Castro shifted to the left wing. Kenny Mansally and Kheli Dube partnered up top in the absence of Taylor Twellman.
Now New England must find a way to win at Toyota Park in Chicago in front of a wild Fire crowd. It will be very difficult for sure, but the veteran Revolution might be able to pull it off. New England should have Gabriel Badilla and Khano Smith back from suspension in the next match.
