It wasn't supposed to go like this. New York Red Bull primed all year for a long run in the MLS playoffs. They brought in highly regarded internationals Thierry Henry and Rafa Marquez spending millions. They opened a beautiful new soccer stadium. In the end it all didn't matter as the San Jose Earthquakes sent them crashing out of the MLS playoffs winning 3-1 in New York.
Trailing 1-0 from the first leg, the Earthquakes took no time at all to level the tie through Bobby Convey's strike after only six minutes. It was a brand new series from there and San Jose knew they had a chance.
It was Bobby Convey again in the 75th minute putting San Jose up 2-1 in aggregate as he grabbed his second of the night, New York would answer right back. The home crowd erupted when Juan Pablo Angel scored for New York two minutes later.
In the end it was to be San Jose's night. With only 9 minutes to go Chris Wondolowski notched the goal that would send the Earthquakes through to the Eastern Conference final. The result ust furthered the fact that the MLS Western Conference was dominant all year as the 6th place team from the west knocked out the #2 eastern seed. The Earthquakes will face either the Columbus Crew or the Colorado Rapids in the final.
