The weather conditions in Toronto on Thursday night dictated a sloppy game and that's what fans got as Toronto and New York Red Bull were only able to manage five shots on net the entire evening. At least two found their mark leading to a 1-1 draw.
To the delight of the soggy home crowd it was Toronto FC who found the net first as new defenseman Marco Velez opened the scoring in the 22nd minute with his first career goal, scoring a header from six yards out past Red Bulls goalkeeper Jon Conway. The cross was supplied on a well taken set piece by Laurent Robert. The happiness was doused only minutes later as Red Bull were to answer with a goal of their own.
Just before the half, New York would respond with a free kick of their own. Red Bulls midfielder Dave van den Bergh smoked a left footed strike from 22 yards out on a free kick, curling the ball under the Toronto wall and inside the left post for his second goal of the year. The goal ended a Toronto shutout streak that had reached over four hours in length. The match would go to the half tied at one.
The second half would see fouls and tempers flare, but unfortunately neither side were able to find the winning goal. Neither side were able to move in the Eastern Conference MLS standings. Toronto FC sit 5th on 10 points and New York Red Bull hold 6th on only 8 points from 5 matches.
