Last night was clearly the last straw. An embarrassing 3-1 loss in Honduras sealed the fate of coach Sven-Goran Eriksson and he was fired today as the head coach of Mexico. It looked like all was getting better for Mexico. A good win over Bolivia followed by a 2-0 win over Costa Rica on the weekend, but the midweek trip to Honduras produced a humiliating 3-1 loss in a game that wasn't as close as the 3-1 score indicated. Mexico was flat out beaten in every phase of the game.
The result was the firing Sven-Goran Eriksson only three games into the final round of CONCACAF World Cup qualifying. The change was needed though as Mexico sit 4th in the standings with only 3 points to show from 3 matches.
Asked about Eriksson's possible successor, Nestor de la Torre, director of the Committee of National Teams, added: ''At the right moment we'll announce the next step, but we ask the media to wait a little bit to know what is going to happen."
Speculation is for a Sven-Goran Eriksson return to England to grab an English Premier League job.
