It was a chilly and rainy night in Chicago as Bosnia faced off against Mexico. And yet the crowd was roudy and loud despite the conditions.
Both sides had trouble holding onto the ball on the wet surface, but Mexico was able to establish their dominant possession game. Bosnia was no pushover though as they featured Manchester City's Edin Dzeko.
Mexico jumped ahead early as Giovanni Dos Santos knocked home from close range in the 6th minute of play. Bosnia set about getting the goal back though and produced several quality attacks over the next few minutes. They were rewarded for their efforts at the half hour mark when Edin Dzeko scored past Guillermo Ochoa from a very tight angle.
The match went to halftime even at one each. The second half was plodding along until Mexico introduced Javier Chicarito Hernandez. He was immediately impactful as he produced a pair of good attempts in the 80th minute.
It looked destined for a draw as the game entered its final minutes. Then a massive mistake from Bosnian substitute defender Ognjen Vranjes. Mexico was on the attack and a poor clearance went high into the air. Vranjes waited for it to fall for a clearance, but mishit the clearance and the ball went straight back upwards. He gathered himself again and attempted a bicycle kick that was mishit as well. The ball bounced straight in front of the Bosnia goal where Chicharito slid the ball home for the winner.
Mexico now heads to Texas for a huge match Sunday afternoon against Brazil at a sold out Dallas Cowboys Stadium.
