Maryland capped a huge week of college soccer by travelling to Virginia Tech and smashing the Hokies 7-0 Friday night. Last weekend Maryland defeated ACC rivals Duke 2-0 and then won a nonconference clashp against highly respected #2 UConn on Tuesday evening 1-0. It was the first loss of the season for UConn as freshman Patrick Mullins scored a first half header to provide the winner.
In the Duke win, Maryland was a little more fortunate as Duke missed several quality scoring chances. A controversial penalty kick allowed Maryland to open the scoring in the first half before making it 2-0 just before half.
Six different Maryland players found the net against Virginia Tech as the Terrapins scored early and often in overwhelming the home side. A penalty kick from Casey Townsend opened the scoring. Fellow teammates Matt Kassel, Casey Townsend, Paul Torres, Jason Herrick and Patrick Mullins also found the back of the net.
"I'm very happy with the win and the performance tonight," head coach Sasho Cirovski said. "The score line is flattering because the first half was evenly played. Our efficiency in the attack was just outstanding. This season we have left a lot of chances on the table and tonight we were able to put them in the back of the net."
