North Carolina scored the early goal and then had lady luck shine in grand fashion as they pulled the upset over #1 Wake Forest in an immensely entertaining Mens College Cup semifinal. The other semifinal saw Maryland totally outclass St Johns, but need overtime to win, as St Johns keeper Neal Kitson made several wonderful saves.
North Carolina 1 Wake Forest 0
Brian Shriver scored a nice header in the 4th minute of play as UNC shocked heavy favorites Wake Forest Friday afternoon. It was a back and forth affair which saw North Carolina come out firing. Ther shaky start ended up costing Wake dealy as it took 20 minutes for them to get their legs. After which they created many quality chances to score the tying goal. North Carolina held their slim lead into the 2nd half when Wake Forest began attacking in waves. Wake held a 15-3 shot advantage in the 2nd half, but were unable to beat a determined UNC defense.
Maryland 1 St Johns 0 in extra time
Maryland outclassed St Johns in every phase of the game Friday night except on the scoreboard. The performance was so dominating that St Johns rarely even got down the field with possession. Maryland was completely dominant winning loose balls and controlled 80% of the possession in the match. Credit the St Johns defense for not withering under the pressure and especially credit their keeper Neal Kitson who was absolutely fabulous in turning away several point blank shots. Kitson couldn't stop Graham Zusi's perfect free kick in the 2nd overtime though as Zusi curled the ball into the upper left corner of the net for the winner.
Maryland will now face ACC rivals North Carolina on Sunday for the NCAA Mens Soccer National Championship.
