Defending national champions Maryland are ranked #1 in the 2009 NSCAA preseason college soccer poll that came out last weekend. Despite losing several players the coaches still felt Maryland were the best team in the country. Maryland lost stars Rodney Wallace, Jeremy Hall, AJ Delagarza, Graham Zusi and Omar Gonzalez.
North Carolina and Wake Forest took the #2 and #3 spots giving the powerful ACC the top three spots in the rankings. Akron and St Johns round out the top 5. The Big Ten placed four teams in the initial top 25 led by Indiana at #7 and Northwestern at #9. Michigan State (#20) and Michigan (#22) also made the rankings.
The Big East was well represented in tha rankings as St Johns led the pack at #5. South Florida (#11), UConn (#12) and Notre Dame (#12) gave the Big East 4 teams in the top 12. Louisville also squeeked into the rankings at #25.
With only 10 days or so until the regular season kicks off, teams around the country are training full speed in an effort to be ready. Big early season games loom with the likes of adidas/IU Credit Union Classic where Indiana, Wake Forest, St Johns and Notre Dame will fight it out.
