The big boys are clashing in the Sweet 16 of the 2008 NCAA Mens Soccer Tournament and Saturday saw 5 wondeful matches. With all the top teams fighting it out cinderella UNC Greensboro was the side that was grabbing the attention. After knocking off Duke and then winning at #14 Loyola Maryland, it was #7 South Florida on the books this weekend. Once again UNC Greensboro was up to the task putting up a valiant fight as the match went to penalites. The run was over though as South Florida won the shootout and will now await the winner of the Wake Forest-Dartmouth match.
A couple of west coast powers had to travel across the country for their sweet 16 games and neither faired well. California lost 2-1 at Maryland while UC Irvine went down to St Johns 3-2. Big Ten rivals Michigan and Indiana faced off with Indiana taking a convincing 3-0 victory. The other game on Saturday saw UConn facing off with Creighton. It was a tight game throughtout, but a Seth Sinovic header in overtime put Creighton into the Final 8 where they will meet #2 Maryland.
Three games are on tap for Sunday when #1 Wake Forest hosts Dartmouth, North Carolina hosts Illinois-Chicago and Akron travels to Northwestern.
