Newcastle United fought all last year to gain promotion back into the EPL and they were rewarded with an opening day trip to Old Trafford to face Manchester United. With Wayne Rooney struggling to regain last year's form maybe Newcastle felt they had an opportunity and after a header from Andy Carroll flashed just wide they almost had the lead.
Manchester United would have none of it though and they slowly wrestled control of the match from the upstarts. Dimitar Berbatov put the home side in front on 33 minutes as he slotted home a nice pass from Paul Scholes. Darren Fletcher made it 2-0 just before the break and the match was all but decided.
Wayne Rooney was unable to find the net before he was substituted, but a Ryan Giggs volley put an exclamation point on the Manchester United victory. Newcastle will need to fight for every point this year in their effort to stay up, but with a wonderful home crowd and a feisty squad they will probably be able to survive.
