The Community Shield is always much aniticipated. It always provides a pair of bignames, wonderful attacking soccer and rings in the new EPL season. Sunday afternoon was no different at Wembley as Manchester United ran out 3-1 winners over Chelsea.
After a dreadful World Cup display, Wayne Rooney looked comfortable and ready to make his usual impact for Manchester United. He was active and lively and provided the pass to Valencia for the opening goal of the match in the 41st minute of play. Chelsea came harder in the second half and if not for Edwin van der Sar in the United net, the scoreline may have been much different. He made several quality saves to keep Chelsea off the board.
Manchester United doubled their lead in the 76th when new signing Javier Hernandez got good fortune as a mis-hit shot bounced off his face and into the Chelsea net. The Blues would draw one back and try to make it interesting late on as Salomon Kalou netted, but United would have none of it as Berbatov scored in injury time to settle the deal.
The EPL season opens next weekend with Manchester United hosting newly promoted Newcastle while Chelsea host West Brom.
