Manchester United protected their slim lead in the English Premier League by beating Sunderland 2-0 thanks to two goals by red hot
Dimitar Berbatov on Sunday at Old Trafford. United were rarely troubled on the afternoon as Sunderland could never sustain much of an attack against the EPL leaders.
Berbatov headed home a cross by Wayne Rooney in the fifth minute. A shot by the Bulgaria striker deflected in off Anton Ferdinand in the 57th minute, giving him a league leading 13 goals this EPL season. On the other end, Edwin Van der Saar had little to do other than a late diving stop of a long range Sunderland effort.
United, which has only lost once this season in all competitions, dominated the first half against injury-ravaged Sunderland but had only Berbatov's early strike to show for it. "We are coming into good form," United manager Alex Ferguson said. "We were solid at the back which is a good sign for us."
Manchester United will be right back at it on Tuesday as they face a tricky trip to Birmingham who will be fresh after their match at Everton was called off due to poor weather today.
