Manchester United moved closer to the English Premier League title on Sunday as they came from behind to defeat Arsenal 2-1 on a penalty from Cristiano Ronaldo and a superb free kick from Owen Hargreaves. Arsenal had struck just after halftime as some constant pressure led to a Robin van Persie cross into the box where the Man U defenders hesitated. Emmanuel Adebayor came streaking in and deflected the ball into the net. Reviews showed the ball struck Adebayor in the arm as he put it in the goal, but it was allowed to stand.
Shortly after Manchester United went on the attack immediately after and were rewarded with a penalty as William Gallas handled the ball in the box. Cristiano Ronaldo stepped up and scored his 38th goal on the season to even the match. Man U clearly had the momentum and earned a free kick shortly after. While the Arsenal players waited for Ronaldo to take the set piece Owen Hargreaves stepped up and scored a wonderful strike into the left corner of the goal as Lehman didn't even move on the shot.
Arsenal could have fared much better on the day though as they left several good chances unfinished. The 3 points for Manchester effectively ends Arsenal's chase for the title this year as they sit 9 points behind currently. Chelsea has a chance to draw to within 3 points if they can take care of Blackburn tomorrow. A win over Blackburn would set up a hueg clash next weekend as Manchester United visits Chelsea.
