Manchester City dropped important points Wednesday as Birmingham rallied at home for a 2-2 draw. The worst of it was that all the other EPL sides in the top 5 won their matches this round leaving Man City to drop two points against all their competition.
City named Carlos Tevez, Edin Dzeko and David Silva in a three-pronged attack at Birmingham, and it took them all of four minutes to find a breakthrough. The goal came with a huge dose of fortune as Tevez fired goalwards from an ambitious angle, forcing a deflection off Martin Jiranek that found its way past Ben Foster. Credit to Birmingham though as they would no go quietly. Halfway through the opening half they tied the match up as Nikola Zigic stabbed home from close range.
The second half opened with City jumping back in front. A wonderful freekick from Aleksander Kolarov gave the visitors a 2-1 lead. Birmingham would once again rally as they put considerable pressure on the City defense and keeper Hart. The hosts earned a penalty kick when Patrick Viera made a reckless challenge just inside the box. Craig Gardner rifled home the spotkick and the match was headed to a 2-2 draw.
The result leaves Manchester City on the verge of being out of the race as they trail Manchester United by 8 points and have played an extra game. United hold a 5 point lead over second place Arsenal.
