Liverpool and Manchester City are looking for bigger things in the new year and both closed out 2009 with wins Saturday. Liverpool can't wait for 2009 to be over. A dreadful performance in the Champions League coupled with some poor results in the EPL have left fans and players looking to the new year for better things. The Reds closed 2009 with a solid 2-0 win at Wolverhampton behind goals from Steven Gerrard and Yossi Benayoun. The win helped Liverpool move up to 7th in the EPL standings as they try to track down one of the four Champions League spots for next fall.
Manchester City welcomed new coach Roberto Mancini and rewarded him with a solid win at Stoke. The good performance capped a turbulent week at City as drama prevailed over the coaching change. First half goals from Martin Petrov and Carlos Tevez sent the squad on their way as they currently sit 6th in the EPL standings.
Elsewhere Saturday, EPL leaders Chelsea struggled to a scoreless draw at surprise Birmingham who are looking more worthy of their 8th place position. The draw leaves Chelsea 5 points clear of Manchester United who play Sunday.
West Ham got an important victory over bottom dwellars Portsmouth winning 2-0. The win moves West Ham out of the bottom three. Everton got a good point as they drew 1-1 at Sunderland and Wigan and Blackburn also played to a 1-1 tie.
