Liverpool gave life to their season scoring a pair of second half goals in defeating rivals Manchester United 2-0 Sunday afternoon. An early season run of poor form has seen Liverpool drop four of their first nine EPL matches, but Sunday they breathed new life into the season in a second half that saw a bit of everything.
After a scoreless opening 45 minutes, the game sprang to life after the break. Fernando Torres opened the scoring in the 64th minute putting away a perfect pass from Yossi Benayoun. The goal enlivened the home crowd and spurred visiting Manchester United forward to seek the equalizer. Nani had the chance the even the game receiving a ball from Michael Owen in tight, but his rising shot glanced off the crossbar.
Things got more difficult for Man U when center back Vidic was sent off for his second yellow and the team went down to ten men. The officials signaled five minutes of extra time and Manchester had a lifeline. More help came in the 92nd when Javier Mascherano was sent off after earning his second yellow, but it was Liverpool who would grab the last carrot.
A late counterattack freed substitute David Ngog on a clear breakaway. He slid the ball low and into the right corner of the net for the exclamation point on a bright day for Liverpool. The win brings Liverpool back into the chase and gives hope they can turnaround from a poor start.
