It was another wonderful win for a Liverpool squad famous for their Champions League scalps in recent years. An 82nd minute header from Yossi Benayoun earned a precious away goal and the win with the 2nd leg heading back to Liverpool. It was Real Madrid's first loss of 2009 and a costly one it could turn out to be. Now Real Madrid must go to Liverpool, find the net and grab the difficult road win.
Elsewhere in Champions League play Bayern Munich destroyed Sporting Lisbon in Portugal 5-0. The tie now heads back to Germany effectively over as Bayern can cruise into the Champions League quarterfinals. Chelsea rode a Didier Drogba first half goal to a 1-0 home win over Juventus, but now must weather the return trip to Italy to advance. A 2nd half penalty from American Guiseppe Rossi earned Villareal a dissapointing home draw with Panathinaikos. Now the Greek side must be considered the favorites to pull the upset.
