Manchester United got the dream start they were looking for after a 4th minute Carlos Tevez goal, but they were unable see the match through as Ryan Babel scored the winner as Liverpool rallied for a 2-1 win.
Carlos Tevez opened the scoring for United just three minutes into the match as he beat compatriot and close friend Javier Mascherano. Dimitar Berbatov broke away from the Reds defence on his debut before crossing in to the Argentine who finished beautifully, placing the ball in the top right corner of Pepe Reina's goal.
In the 27th minute the home side were thrilled to score a fluke equaliser when Xabi Alonso's cross came off Patrice Evra's leg. van der Sar came out but his save bounced in to Wes Brown and deflected back into the box. Brown's own goal saw the Reds draw level and the Anfield faithful up the noise level.
Liverpool substitute Ryan Babel was to be the hero on the day. His 78th minute goal came after Javier Mascherano harried Ryan Giggs in to an error with Dirk Kuyt squaring for his fellow Dutchman. United finished the match with ten men after Nemanja Vidic received his second yellow card for a challenge on Xabi Alonso as Rafa Benitez celebrated his first league win over Alex Ferguson's side. The result sees Liverpool go temporarily to the top of the Premier League table while Manchester United stay in ninth.
