Liverpool needed a late Fernando Torres goal to grab a road win at Portsmouth Saturday, while Chelsea were held scoreless by Hull. Aston Villa moved past Chelsea and into 3rd place with their 2-0 win over Blackburn and Everton drew closer to the top four with the win over Bolton.
Torres was subbed into the match for the final 15 minutes as Liverpool was looking to grab the vital 3 points. In the 85th minute Torres set up Dirk Kuyt to tie the score at 2 and then in stoppage time scoring a header for the win. The Liverpool win briefly moves them past Manchester United who plays on Sunday. Manchester United trail Liverpool by one point but have two games in hand.
Chelsea were held to a disappointing home draw by Hull City and were passed by Aston Villa who won their 7th consecutive road match. Manchester City continues to move clear of the relegation zone as they defeated Middlesbrough 1-0.
