The Los Angeles Galaxy slipped past rivals Chivas USA 3-2 on aggregate after a 1-0 win Sunday at the Home Depot Center. Landon Donovan scored the winner from the penalty spot in the 73rd minute of play. After playing to a 2-2 draw in the opening leg of the quarterfinal matchup, the second leg was not nearly as open and end to end. Neither team wanted to make the big mistake leading to a goal.
The play leading to the penalty started with David Beckham who played a wonderful ball from midfield that fell into Landon Donovan's path at the left of the penalty area. Donovan put a cross to the back post for Chad Magee, and as he tried to cut back inside Chivas defender Yamith Cuesta caught Magee and brought him down. Landon calmly put home the penalty and the Galaxy were on their way.
It marks the third straight year in which Chivas USA fall in the opening round of the MLS playoffs. Los Angeles will advance to face the Houston Dynamo in the MLS Western Conference Finals.
