Everything went wrong in Italy for Tottenham Wednesday as they traveled to face Inter Milan. It was supposed to be a day where Tottenham showed their value in Europe, but instead they were behind 3-0 before they knew what hit them. Javier Zanetti put Inter ahead in less than two minutes shocking the EPL side. Just minutes later things went from bad to worse as Tottenham keeper Gomes took down Biabiany in the penalty area and was shown red. Samuel Eto'o put home the spot kick. It was 2-0 and Tottenham were down to 10 men.
Clearly stunned, it was no surprise Inter struck again almost immediately as Stankovic fired home past substitute keeper Cudicini. Inter took their foot off the gas at 3-0 and Tottenham tried to get their feet underneath them. In the 35th minute Inter would find a fourth though when Coutinho slid a perfect ball in behind the defense to Samuel Eto'o who finished with class. The game went to halftime 4-0 and Tottenham looking for the bus to the airport.
The second half saw Tottenham show the pride and effort that was expected in the opening half. They were able to grab a a goal back in the 52nd minute through Gareth Bale. Inter Milan were clearly in cruise control as they were just looking to play out the match. Tottenham's ten men had other ideas....in particular Gareth Bale. The midfielder zipped into the Inter box and scored a quality goal in the 90th minute and then followed that up only a minute later to finish his hat trick. The match ended 4-3 to Inter, but Tottenham can hold their heads high after showing some fight in the second half.
Meanwhile, at Old Trafford the focus was about off the field drama rather than the match at hand. Star striker Wayne Rooney has been in the press all week as he confirmed rumours that he is want to leave the club and play elsewhere. Coach Sir Alex Ferguson ran a very young side out to meet Bursaspor of Turkey with Macheda getting the start up top. A 7th minute goal from Nani set the home side on their way, but a stingy and conservative Bursaspor kept the score down as they set back all night. The match ended 1-0 to Manchester United with Bursaspot not managing a shot on goal the entire 90 minutes.
There were no real shockers on the day in Champions League play. FC Twente were able to earn a draw with Werder Bremen while both Schalke and Lyon cruised to victory in their matches. Barcelona got two goals from Lionel Messi to defeat Copenhagen 2-0. The win moved Barca over Copenhagen and into the top spot in Group D.
