For Holland it was business as usual as they rolled to their 4th straight victory at the 2010 World Cup. This one was important though as star Arjen Robben made his debut after missing the group stages recovering from injury. Waht a debut it was as he rang out his World Cup arrival in the 18th minute cutting inside on his strong left foot and firing a low shot past Jan Mucha into the Slovakian goal.
"It's fantastic," coach Bert van Marwijk said. "After such an injury that he has the touch to score a goal like that."
With a sharp breeze blowing in from the nearby Indian Ocean, Robben nearly doubled the lead in the 50th minute, but Mucha deflected his shot just wide of the goal. A minute later, Robben sent a dangerous cross inside the area and Mucha blocked a close-range shot from Joris Mathijsen.
Wesley Sneijder sealed the victory when some good work from Dirk Kuyt drew Mucha out of his net. Kuyt slid a perfect ball to Sneijder who slid the ball into the vacant net. Slovakia would pull one back through a penalty at the death, but Holland left deserved winners.
Next up could be a huge matchup with Brazil in the quarterfinals providing Brazil do as expected and take care of Chile today.
