Group C in chaos at World Cup

Group C in chaos at World Cup

What a total mess Group C has turned out to be at the 2010 World Cup.  Nothing has gone according to plan.  England is expected to beat the US, but a Robert Green howler leaves a 1-1 draw.  Slovenia has come out of nowhere, partially thanks to another goalkeeper goof in the Algeria game.  The Americans sleepwalk through an opening half and find themselves down 2-0 before a valiant second half rally where only a crazy referee decision keeps them from a stunning victory.  England looks terrible in playing a scoreless draw with Algeria and the collective thought that England have a bunch of good players but not a team gains steam.  Wayne Rooney might as well be on the bench as he has been totally a non-factor in either match.

Current Group C Standings:
Slovenia  4 with a 3-2 differential
USA       2  with a 3-3 differential
England  2 with a 1-1 differential
Algeria   1 with a 0-1 differential

So what now?  One round of play left.  All four teams are alive and kicking.  England faces Slovenia while the US takes on Algeria.  For the Americans it is simple business.  Beat Algeria and you are into the next round.  For Slovenia it is also simple.  Earn a win or draw against England and they are moving on.  Algeria must beat the US and hope for England to not win against Slovenia.  England also advances with a win over Slovenia.

The real issues arise in cases of another round of ties.  If both games end in draws most likely the US advances thanks to their goals scored record.  Bottom line is that next Wednesday will be packed full of drama of the highest level.
